Little Rock, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced a new appointment to one of the state’s most important higher education governing bodies, naming a business leader and longtime Arkansas advocate to help guide the future of the University of Arkansas system.
Sanders confirmed that Ashley Caldwell has been appointed to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, replacing Kelly Eichler. Caldwell’s term is set to run through 2036, positioning her to play a long-term role in shaping higher education across the state.
“Ashley has proven herself as a talented leader in business and philanthropy and is uniquely qualified to serve on the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees. As my administration reforms and improves our state’s higher education system, I am confident Ashley will be a tremendous asset to the UA board as we work together to build a better Arkansas for generations to come,” said Governor Sanders. “I’m grateful to my good friend, Kelly Eichler, for her service to the university and our state, and look forward to her continued work on behalf of the people of Arkansas.”
A Personal Connection to the University of Arkansas
For Caldwell, the appointment carries deep personal meaning tied to her experiences at the University of Arkansas.
“I am honored, humbled, and energized for the opportunity that Governor Sanders has bestowed upon me to serve our state and our students as part of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees,” said Ashley Caldwell. “In 1998, I took my first steps on the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville campus, and those steps changed my life. I developed enduring relationships with individuals from across the state and country. I met my husband on Garland Avenue, was baptized at University Baptist Church, and received an excellent education from the Walton College of Business, positioning me for a fulfilling career. I welcome the responsibility of contributing to the institution and system that has given so much to me, and I am dedicated to supporting its continued growth and innovation for future generations, including my own children.”
Caldwell’s connection to the university goes beyond academics. Her time on campus shaped both her personal and professional journey, something she now hopes to give back to through her new role.
Professional Experience and Leadership Background
Caldwell currently serves as the Senior Director of Strategic Accounts at Embecta Corporation, a company focused on diabetes care solutions. In her role, she leads efforts across retail, marketing, and distribution partnerships, working closely with organizations across the United States to address healthcare challenges.
Her performance has been widely recognized, earning her five President’s Club awards as well as the company’s Winner’s Circle award for outstanding achievement.
Before joining Embecta, Caldwell spent more than a decade at Newell Rubbermaid, where she built a strong reputation in sales and analytics. Working out of the Bentonville office from 2002 to 2014, she managed the Walmart account for one of the company’s most important business areas. Under her leadership, that segment grew into the largest within Newell’s Walmart portfolio.
She also played a role in mentoring future professionals, serving as a recruiting liaison to the Walton College and helping guide students entering the workforce.
Service Beyond the Workplace
Caldwell’s work extends beyond her professional career into community leadership and philanthropy. She currently serves as President of the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and improving the historic Governor’s Mansion.
In that role, she recently led the organization’s 75th Anniversary Celebration, setting fundraising records and overseeing the renovation of the Janet M. Huckabee Grand Hall.
Despite her many accomplishments, Caldwell emphasizes that her most meaningful role is being a parent. She and her husband, Chris, are raising two children, Harley and Amelia, and share a strong connection to the University of Arkansas through family traditions and Razorback events.
Roots, Education, and Inspiration
Caldwell graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2002 from the University of Arkansas Sam Walton College of Business with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She was also awarded both the Chancellor’s Distinguished Scholarship and the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship, becoming the first member of her family to earn a traditional four-year degree.
Her upbringing played a major role in shaping her work ethic. She credits her father for teaching her entrepreneurial values through his work opening and managing restaurants across Arkansas. At the same time, her mother’s decision to return to college while raising a family left a lasting impression, reinforcing the importance of education and perseverance.
Caldwell, a native of Jacksonville, Arkansas, is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s High School and now lives in Little Rock with her family. She remains active in her church, school activities, and the broader community.
With her appointment, state leaders say Caldwell brings a blend of business experience, personal connection to the university, and a commitment to service—qualities expected to help guide the University of Arkansas system into its next chapter.
