Little Rock, Arkansas – The Little Rock Fire Department has formally requested over $150,000 from the city for the purchase of new uniforms. The primary objective is to ensure firefighters remain adequately equipped for their duties and are safeguarded against harmful carcinogens.
Uniforms are not just a matter of protocol but are crucial for the safety of the firefighters as they attend to emergencies in the city. According to Jason Weaver, the Public Information Officer for LRFD, it’s typical for firefighters to possess two sets of these protective gear, known as turnouts.
However, newer firefighters, such as Anthony Delgado, who has been with the department for merely four months, currently have only one set. The funding will ensure that these firefighters have an additional set, thereby preventing any service disruptions.
Captain Weaver emphasizes the health benefits of having an extra turnout set. “They found the sooner they can get those turnouts decontaminated, the more it reduces the chances of developing cancer,” he remarked. Moreover, having a second set allows the initial set to last longer due to decreased wear.
Mr. Delgado expressed his anticipation for the second turnout, mentioning, “I’m really excited to get the second set, that way I can throw these in the wash, put my dry set on and then ready to go.”
The proposed budget allocation is anticipated to fund approximately 50 new sets of turnouts. The city board is set to deliberate on this matter during their forthcoming Tuesday session.
