Forrest City, Arkansas – In a ruling related to a violent incident on Interstate 40 nearly two years ago, an Arkansas man has been handed a life sentence.
Justin Mays, a 26-year-old resident of Forrest City, was convicted for the murder of 21-year-old Kindylen Roberts, according to officials from the Arkansas State Police.
The incident, which unfolded on the 21st of August, 2021, saw Mays open fire on a vehicle that was cruising along I-40 near Morgan. His bullets hit Roberts, who was occupying the passenger seat of the vehicle.
Unfortunately Roberts would later pass away from his injuries at a local hospital. Two other passengers sustained injuries in the same event, as stated by agents from the Arkansas State Police.
Mays’ crimes, which include capital murder, two instances of terroristic acts, and two instances of first-degree battery, led to his severe sentence. In addition to a life term, he has been sentenced to a further decade under the custody of the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
“This case is a successful collaboration made possible by solid police work, a meticulous investigation, and careful analysis of evidence,” said ASP Colonel Mike Hagar. “This case was a team effort that really highlights the value of the Department of Public Safety and the importance of strong relationships with our prosecutorial partners.”
ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division worked tirelessly on the case, scouring over phone records, consulting with prosecutors, and working with the Arkansas State Crime Lab.
“We have made it a priority to strengthen our communication and cooperation with law enforcement,” said Sixth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Will Jones. “The safety of our citizens depends on this relationship. This case is a great example of the value of that partnership, and the outcome was the result of hard work on the part of the Arkansas State Police and the Sixth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.”
