Little Rock, Arkansas – The Little Rock City Board has greenlit the addition of 30 state-of-the-art cameras for the Little Rock Police Department, linked directly to the real-time crime center.
These upgraded devices present a stark contrast to some of the existing cameras in the city. Major Ty Tyrell commented on the current system, noting, “You can tell by looking at the image quality that it’s very poor. It’s very difficult. We can see a vehicle moving, but comparing anything on it is tough.”
In comparison, the newer cameras offer vastly improved image clarity. Major Tyrell emphasized the advantages, stating, “This is a no-brainer. This will help us identify suspect vehicles and understand what’s going on in the street much better than the poor quality image.”
He further pointed out that the new cameras boast superior nighttime imaging and faster motion. Plans are in place to install these devices in strategic locations, including problematic parks and to expand coverage in the River Market and SOMA district.
Historically, the real-time crime center has proven its worth. For instance, in August alone, it played a pivotal role in tracking down 13 stolen vehicles. “Narrows the officers’ focus so we can easily identify that stolen vehicle and recover it,” Tyrell explained.
For Tyrell, embracing this advanced technology is non-negotiable. He emphasized its necessity, stating, “In order for it to function well, it has to have access to upgraded and current technology. This is just one step that we’re making sure that the real-time crime center is as efficient as possible.”
