Little Rock, Arkansas – Little Rock’s famed River Market Entertainment District is about to become even more sprawling. The city’s board of directors has given the green light for a significant expansion of the district’s downtown boundaries. In a recent meeting held on Monday night, a unanimous vote was cast in favor of extending the entertainment zone.
The newly approved parameters will see the district stretching from East Second Street down to East Fourth Street. The perimeter is defined between Cumberland Street and the Interstate 30 Frontage Road. Before this expansion, the official boundaries encompassed all public spaces within the 300 – 600 blocks of President Clinton Avenue, along with the 100 block of North Rock Street and North Commerce Street. This move is anticipated to boost local businesses and increase the allure of the entertainment district.
New Public Safety Commission Established
In the same meeting, the board also emphasized its commitment to public safety. An ordinance was passed that approved the formation of the Little Rock Public Safety Commission. This new body has been initiated in response to escalating crime rates within the city. With an emergency clause attached, the commission is slated to begin its work without delay.
The 13-member commission has been granted the authority to propose policy changes, introduce new programs, and devise strategies to curb crime throughout Little Rock. While violent crime remains a primary concern, the commission will also delve into broader issues like juvenile justice, public health concerns, early childhood complications, domestic violence, and challenges associated with substance abuse. The establishment of this commission underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring a safer environment for all its residents.
